Salwa Eid Naser shocks rest of field to win 400m world title in Doha

Salwa Eid Naser recorded the third fastest time in history with an incredible race in the 400m final at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

The time of 48.14 seconds blew away the rest of the field, and for the 21-year-old from Bahrain it was one better than two years ago in London where she took the silver medal.

Pre-race favourite Shaunae-Miller Uibo ran the sixth fastest time in history with a time of 48.37 seconds, but could simply do nothing to stop Naser. Her long strides threatened a heart in the mouth finish, but Naser held on for the coveted gold medal.

Once she crossed the finish line, pure shock engulfed most of the runners at what Naser had produced. The top five had all recorded personal bests, but Naser will take all the headlines.

Elsewhere, China's Gong Lijiao swept her way to the gold medal in the shot put final with a throw of 19.55m. Jamaica's Danniel Thomas-Dodd took silver while Germany's Christina Schwanitz took bronze.

Great Britain's Sophie McKinna, who reached the final with a personal best of 18.61m yesterday, finished in 11th place after a best effort of 17.99m today. However, she has reached the qualifying mark for the Olympic Games next year with her attempt in qualifying and will look to improve on this career-best showing at the championships.

Scot Laura Muir is through to the 1500m final after finishing third in her semi-final with a time of four minutes and 1.05 seconds. Her training partner Gabriela Debues-Stafford and America's Jenny Simpson finished ahead of her.

Muir came into the event having not raced since July 20 at the Anniversary Games in London due to a calf injury, but she looked relaxed and calm ahead of her bid to win a first world title.
