Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce wins fourth 100m world title with Dina Asher-Smith claiming silver

Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce produced a brilliant performance to secure her fourth world gold medal as Dina Asher-Smith ran a British record to win silver at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

Fraser-Pryce followed on from her stunning pace in the heats and the semi-final to pull away from the rest of the field early on and finish in 10.71 seconds - the best time in the world this year and just 0.01 seconds off the championships record.

In a high quality final, Asher-Smith hit 10.83 seconds to run her personal best and get Britain's first world medal in the women's 100 metres since Dorothy Hyman at the Rome Olympics in 1960.

Third place went to Ivorian Marie-Josee Ta Lou, who ran a time of 10.9 seconds.

As expected Fraser-Pryce, who came back to the sport this year after giving birth, was out of the blocks incredibly quickly and it became almost impossible for anyone to get close to her.

But Asher-Smith did not lose hope from seeing the blistering pace from her Jamaican rival and looked focussed on running her best race, which she did. She lowered her best time in the 100 metres by 0.02 seconds, after 10.85 seconds at the European Championships last year.

Fraser-Pryce now has eight gold medals at the World Championships and with four of them being in the 100 metres she can now truly be regarded as one of the greatest performers in history.
