WATCH: Great Britain's Perri Shakes-Drayton announce her retirement from athletics with an emotional video

British athletics star Perri Shakes-Drayton has announced her retirement after 16 years as a professional with an emotional video looking back on her career.

The 31 year-old has enjoyed a stellar career with Team GB, becoming 400m European Indoor champion in 2013.

She also played a key part in the women's 4x400m after she took home a silver medal at the 2011 and 2017 world championships.

Speaking on social media, she said: "20 years since I was first introduced to athletics as a little girl, 16 years as a professional athlete.

"I've decided to call it a day and hang up my spikes. Athletics has gave me many opportunities, including travelling the world and meeting many people.

"I've learnt a lot on my journey through the highs and lows, a big reason for the women I am today."
