Lauren Price becomes first Welsh woman to win World Boxing title - after result is appealed

Wales' middleweight boxer Lauren Price won the world Boxing Championships in controversial circumstances on a split decision.

The Welsh fighter initially lost the fight to the Netherland's Nouchka Fontijn after three judges initially ruled in favour of the Dutch woman (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) and two put the Brit ahead each scoring 29-28 in her favour.

However, an appeal from Price and GB Boxing had the decision overturned and Price was awarded the title.

Having only ever achieved a bronze at these games before, Price now joins Kevin Evans and Andrew Selby on an exclusive list of Welsh boxers to claim victory.

Speaking after the controversial fight the champion said: "I definitely thought I did enough to win - the first round was close but I definitely thought I won the second and third rounds,

"I'm over the moon with that, you only dream of becoming world champion, but I'm Commonwealth champion, European champion and now World champion."

She now has her eyes firmly set on Tokyo 2020, saying: "I've only got one more to go and obviously that's the Olympic medal. I just feel I'm on the right path and improving all the time."
