Mum-of-three and Olympic boxing hopeful Charley Davison on proving the doubters wrong

Boxer Charley Davison is determined to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics this summer after a seven year hiatus from the sport.

Davison took time out to bring up her three children, Arnell, eight, Armani, six, and Amir, four.

The 26-year-old has said that because she has children people have doubted her ability in the ring.

“People think you can’t do stuff after having kids. I know people doubted me with three kids. ‘She won’t be able to come back,’ they’d say, even before I boxed the [English Boxing Amateur] Championships.

"I do feel mentally stronger. Having doubters makes you more determined and gives you the drive to believe you can do it. I’m just glad I’ve proved them wrong,” she told The Telegraph.

Davison competes in the -51kg flyweight category as there is not a category for her optimal weight, -54kg. Men have eight different weight categories and women only have five.

She has criticised the sport for its lack of equality.

“It is wrong really. There are so many more women boxing nowadays. There should be more weight categories just like the men’s - it should be equal to be honest. Both amateur and professional women’s boxing is booming.

"I don’t struggle to make 51kg, but I felt so good at 54kg, it was unbelievable. Maybe after Tokyo they’ll bring a few more categories in - I would be gutted in some ways because I would have liked it to have been this year.”

The Tokyo Olympic boxing qualifiers are taking place this week.
