British champion Scott Fitzgerald has licence suspended after arrest for alleged assault

British super-welterweight champion Scott Fitzgerald has been suspended by the boxing board after he was arrested for allegedly assaulting a woman.

The 28-year-old 2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist confirmed his arrest on Instagram. He was released on bail until May 21.

Lancashire Police said a 28-year-old man had been arrested on suspicion of assault in the Ryelands Crescent area of Preston.

The British British Boxing Board of Control suspended his licence pending further enquiries.

It comes just days after the BBBoC suspended another British fighter in WBO super-middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders.

The 30 year-old posted a video on social media 'advising' men on how to hit women during the coronavirus pandemic.

Promoter Eddie Hearn slammed Saunders' video, saying: "I was appalled really. It was so idiotic, it was so frustrating because I know Billy well. It's one step forward, four steps back with Billy Joe Saunders and it is frustrating."

Saunders later apologised and said he would accept whatever punishment was handed out.
