England will face India in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup after rain caused the final Group B game between South Africa and the West Indies to be rained off without a ball being bowled in Sydney.

The abandoned match means that South Africa remain unbeaten in the group and finish top, with Heather Knight's England in second, having lost to South Africa in their opening game.

India emerge unbeaten from Group A, finishing ahead of hosts Australia, who will therefore take on South Africa.

Both games are due to take place at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Thursday, but with rain forecast and no reserve day in place, there could be a huge shake-up to procedings.

Should a game be rained off, the group winners (India and South Africa) would advance to Sunday's final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, meaning both England and Australia would be eliminated.

England's 2017 World Cup winner and Test Match Special commentator, Alex Hartley said it was 'mindblowing' that there is no reserve day for the semi-finals at such a huge tournament.

"Rain happens, even in Australia," she said.

"I'd rather have the chance of playing - it's an hour's flight to Melbourne from Sydney. It's not like they're asking players to fly halfway round the world.

"India and South Africa have played the most consistent cricket so they do deserve to be top of the group but it is mindblowing there's no reserve day," she added.

Tournament organisers are anticipating a record attendance for a women's sporting event at the MCG on Sunday, having already sold more than 50,000 tickets and aiming to beat the 90,185, set at the 1999 football World Cup final between USA and China in California.
