Curling star Eve Muirhead 'proud' to win eighth national title

Curling star Eve Muirhead has said that she won't take the Scottish championship title for granted following the eighth time she has claimed the crown.

Muirhead had a three-year gap between her seventh and eighth title wins as she underwent hip surgery.

She captained her team to an 8-3 win over Team Wilson in the final at the weekend. She has said she was worried she would be stuck on seven titles for the remainder of her career.

“It feels really good and probably just as good as the first, pretty special in its way because it’s the first one since my surgery and there are times after that when you’re wondering whether you’re going to be at the top of the podium again.

“For us to come out this week and stay really strong as a team and as a unit, putting together the performances we did, I’m really proud of the team and myself for being able to do that.”

The win qualifies Murihead's team for the World Championships in Canada in March. She added that the competition is a good builder for the Winter Olympics in 2022.

"To represent Scotland at the World Championships again is going to be great and Canada’s a country you always want to go to for the Worlds, while we’re also looking to bank up a few Olympic points.

“It’s very important to do this in the middle of an Olympic cycle. We still want to be the team going to the Olympic Games and obviously we don’t know the selection process yet, but of course this can also give us one foot forward when you win a Scottish title, so that was important.

"However, we just need to keep delivering as a team and that’s all we can do.”
