Annemiek van Vleuten insists she is not racing for overall victory despite third successive prologue victory

Annemiek van Vleuten says she is not aiming to win the general classification at the Boels Ladies Tour despite taking victory in the prologue.

Wearing the rainbow stripes signifying her status as world time trial champion, she covered the 3.8 kilometre course in a time of five minutes and four seconds.

Germany's national TT champion Lisa Klein finished in second place, six seconds behind the Dutch specialist, with Team Sunweb's Lucinda Brand another second back.

Ellen van Dijk was one of the favourites to win the stage but fell off due to a mechanical problem.

However, despite having won the overall in both 2017 and 2018, Van Vleuten believes the course this year will not allow her to challenge for the win.

After the stage, Van Vleuten said: "I am not here for the GC at all.

"When I saw the course, I was a bit disappointed that there is no time trial and no hard, hilly stage. When you come here to prepare for the World Championships, I think they should have at least one or two hard stages.

"This year it's more a course for the sprinters. That will mean that I'm not going to defend this jersey with my team. We will go for stage wins and have some fun without pressure this year."

The first proper stage will see the peloton ride 123 kilometres from Stramproy to Weert on a day designed to set up a sprint finish.
