Barker wins points race to give Great Britain first gold medal of 2020 World Track Championships

Elinor Barker won Great Britain's first gold medal of the World Track Championships after she took the points race title in Berlin.

The 25-year-old Brit produced a sensational solo attack to gain a lap on the field and finish on 50 points.

Barker, who also won the points race in 2017, finished ahead of American Jennifer Valente and Norwegian Anita Yvonne.

"It felt surreal after gaining the lap. There were still 15 laps to go and I was completely gone," said the 2016 Olympic team pursuit champion.

"I was relying on fact that everyone else was really close together and controlling each other.

"I had a conversation with my coach before over whether we would we be happy to say I had a good ride. I said, 'No I'd rather take some big risks'. That could either have put me in 15th or put me in a position to win."

Barker was also a part of the GB team that won silver in the team pursuit earlier this week.

And she will be hoping to go one step further in Tokyo later this year as Britain look to improve on their tally of 12 medals at the Rio Games four years ago.
