British cyclist Emily Nelson clinches scratch race title at European Track Championships

Emily Nelson has won gold in the scratch race event at the European Track Championships in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands.

The British rider, who won her first world title last year at the age of just 21, led out the sprint impressively from four laps to go to power past Ireland's Shannon McCurley for the win.

Portugal's Maria Martins propped up the third spot on the podium.

After the race, Nelson said: "I'm really happy with the jersey, especially with it being my first elite European title.

"I started my sprint a couple of laps earlier than I usually would, but I knew I wanted to lead out rather than try to get around other riders."

Meanwhile, Great Britain's team pursuit quartet of Laura Kenny, Katie Archibald. Neah Evans and Ellie Dickinson qualified fastest ahead of the final on Thursday.

As well as the team pursuit, Evans will also be competing in the elimination race, while the sprinters get their European hopes underway as Katy Marchant and Sophie Capewell go for gold.
