Dame Sarah Storey retains her WC5 time trial title at the UCI Para-cycling World Championships but criticises event organisers

Dame Sarah Storey was critical of the level of security at the UCI Para-cycling World Championships following her victory in the WC5 time trial.

The Briton, who was defending the crown she won last year, completed the 20.8 kilometre course in 29 minutes and 41 seconds in The Netherlands.

But following her win, the 14-time paralympic champion was not pleased with the safety of the riders out on the course.

She said: "The concerning part was the low level of security.

"Cars crossing junctions just seconds before riders approached, pedestrians casually crossing on the lights rather than at the direction of marshals.

"This scenario wouldn't be acceptable for the non-disabled World Champs."

Storey was quick to cite the UCI - the organisation which runs the championships - as the ones who need to sort the problem out.

"If the event isn't financed properly to close these roads fully, the UCI need to start investing to bring it up to standard," she added.

"It's one thing to say there's no prize money due to financial constraints, but quite another to risk rider safety for that reason too."
