Lizzie Deignan named in Great Britain's women's team for Road World Championships

Lizzie Deignan has been named part of Great Britain's women's team for the UCI Road World Championships in Yorkshire later this month.

The 30-year-old was crowned world champion back in 2015 when she held off Anna van der Breggen and Megan Guarnier in a sprint finish.

Britain's other major hope for the world title will be Alice Barnes, who currently holds the national road race and time trial crowns.

The rest of the team is made up of Barnes' sister Hannah, Nikki Juniper, Anna Henderson and Lizzy Banks.

As a result of her pedigree as the national time trial champion, Alice Barnes will take on the 30km course along with fellow Brit Hayley Simmonds.

It is the first time the championships will take place in Great Britain since 1982 when Mandy Jones won the women's road race at Goodwood.

The Netherlands remain the favourites to take both the road race and TT victories as they boast a team of various former champions from both disciplines such as Annemiek van Vleuten, Anna van der Breggen and Marianne Vos.

The women's time trial takes place on Tuesday, September 24, while the road race will be on Saturday, September 28.
