Lorena Wiebes wins bunch sprint to move second overall in Boels Ladies Tour

Dutch prospect Lorena Wiebes took victory in stage one of the Boels Ladies Tour and moved up to second overall.

Following a number of attempts to get away from the likes of Trek-Segafredo's Lizzie Deignan, CCC-Liv's Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio and Mitchelton-Scott's Moniek Tenniglo, the peloton was brought to the finish in one big group.

And it was the youngster Wiebes who finished the fastest, beating fellow country woman Kirsten Wild and Letizia Paternoster.

The winner of the prologue Annemiek Van Vleuten went down in a crash early on in the day but recovered to finish in the pack and maintain her lead in the general classification, three seconds ahead of Wiebes.

After the stage, Wiebes said: “It was my goal to win a stage, and I’m happy that I did.

"The pressure is off now. There are still some stages to come, who knows what happens, maybe I can win more stages, and if I do, the GC comes with that.

“It was a very hectic race today, unfortunately there were several crashes, but it was a good race. Femke Markus brought me to the front on the final lap, then I found my own way, got a good wheel and launched the sprint myself.”

The 20-year-old sprinter now has to be considered the favourite to take the overall win given Van Vleuten conceded after the time trial that her team, Mitchelton-Scott, were only at the race for stage victories.

Stage two sees the riders cover 113.7 kilometres where they will start and finish in Gennep.

It is a fast and flat day again so it could see Wiebes, who will be wearing the white U23 jersey, take the overall lead.
