Netherlands crowned first ever mixed relay team time trial world champions as Britain take bronze

The Netherlands won the first ever mixed relay time trial event at the Cycling Road World Championships in Yorkshire.

Each country had a team of six riders - three men and three women - who raced two separate time trials, with the winner decided by who had the quickest cumulative time.

And it was the Dutch who prevailed, finishing just 23 seconds ahead of Germany in second.

Meanwhile, Great Britain claimed an impressive third in front of their home crowd as they pipped Italy to the bronze medal by just nine seconds.

The Italians suffered bad luck when one of their strongest riders Elisa Longo Borghini suffered a puncture which cost them valuable time.

The world championships continue until September 29, with the women's time trial on Tuesday and the road race on Saturday.

Former world champion Lizzie Deignan will once again line up for the road race for Britain alongside compatriot Alice Barnes, with both of them outside tips to take the rainbow jersey.
