Two-time Olympic gold medallist Kristina Vogel 'really happy' as she looks to re-build her life after paralysing crash

Two-time Olympic gold medallist Kristina Vogel says she has built a 'nice life' for herself since the training crash which left her paralysed.

The 29-year-old German was involved in a serious collision with another rider in June 2018 which ended her cycling career.

But Vogel, who has now got involved in politics and police work as well as helping cycling's governing body the UCI, insists she has moved on from the lows of her career on the bike coming to an end.

Speaking to BBC Sport, she said: "I'm really happy now. Out of a bad situation and moment has come a really nice life.

"It has been a fantastic year for me, everything went so fast with a lot of new privileges, a lot of new things I had never done before."

Vogel is currently attending the World Track Championships in Berlin, which many of her former teammates are riding in.

And while the 11-time world champion admits the sense of competitiveness will never leave her, she has come to terms with no longer being an elite athlete.

"I really love watching track cycling now from a different way. The fire is still burning, but otherwise I'm really happy, really pleased and really proud," she added.

"When I was sitting here and saw how fast the girls were, and it was a fantastic performance, I asked myself 'could I do that?'

"That feeling, of wanting to win medals, never goes away. But then every century has its own stars. We are the oldies, it is a new time and it is the beginning of a new journey for them and maybe they are the stars of this new period."
