Wiebes wins RideLondon Classique after Wild disqualified for causing crash at the finish

Lorena Wiebes won the Prudential RideLondon Classique in London in controversial circumstances after Kirsten Wild crossed in first but was disqualified for causing a huge crash before the line.

Wild won the initial sprint ahead of fellow country woman Wiebes with a late lunge for the line on the side of the road.

But she was deemed by the commissaries to have deviated from her racing line which led to a rider clipping her back wheel and wiping out much of the peloton.

Elisa Balsamo finished in third place but was subsequently bumped up to second, while many people's pre-race tip to take victory, Marianne Vos, had to settle for sixth in the final placings.

Alice Barnes, who British fans were hoping could contest for the win in the nation's capital, was taken out of contention in a separate crash inside the final lap.

Wiebes is just 20 years old and has made a name for herself this year with wins at The Netherlands' national road race, the Tour of Yorkshire, the Tour of Chongming Island, the European Games, and a second-place in Gent-Wevelgem.

Wild was going for a third Prudential RideLondon Classique win - second in as many years - and didn't seem aware she had caused the crash immediately after the race.

But the decision was made shortly after the conclusion of the sprint and Wiebes was able to celebrate yet another major scalp in what has been a stellar 2019 for the youngster.

The men's race - the London-Surrey Classic - is tomorrow and also finishes on The Mall.

Australian Caleb Ewan, who just last weekend took victory in the iconic Champs Elysees stage at the Tour de France, is the favourite to win.
