Wild wins scratch race title as Kenny finishes fourth on day one of World Track Championships

Dutch rider Kirsten Wild won her third world scratch race title as Great Britain's Laura Kenny narrowly missed out on a medal on day one of the World Track Championships in Berlin.

Wild led from the front with more than two laps to go and proved far too strong for the rest of the field as she crossed the line unchallenged to kick off what would be a successful day for The Netherlands.

Kenny, who is riding with a broken shoulder, looked set to take silver but was edged out on the line by American Jennifer Valente and Portugal's Maria Martins.

Speaking after the race, Kenny told the BBC: "It was one of those races and it's such a lottery - it's hard to not be disappointed.

"I should've let Kirsten go a bit and if I had some space I would've had something to run into. I was going full gas and fourth is the worst place you can finish.

"I wanted to come regardless of my form and I'm quite pleased to be here, but I wish I had done better in that race.

"I feel alright, that's why it's frustrating. It's just a tactical error and one of those things you can change. My legs felt good but my tactics were just not that good.

"My shoulder is still broken but when I'm on the bike I can't feel it at all."

Elsewhere on day one, the Dutch men's team sprint smashed the world record in qualifying before going even faster in the final to obliterate all the other teams in contention.

Great Britain secured their first medal of the world championships by finishing second as Jack Carlin, Jason Kenny and Ryan Owens finished 0.429 in front of Australia.

And in the team pursuit qualifying rounds, GB had mixed fortunes as the women's quartet safely made it through to the final, but the men missed out.
