Eddie Hearn reveals plans to make Katie Taylor v Amanda Serrano the first-ever female fight to headline Madison Square Garden in New York

Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed he plans to make history in 2020 by featuring Katie Taylor in the first-ever female headline fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The 33-year-old Olympic gold medalist became the undisputed lightweight world champion in June, before moving up to 140 pounds and winning the WBO World Super Lightweight crown.

And Hearn, who has promoted Taylor since her professional debut in 2016, believes she had a perfect 2019.

Speaking to iFLTV, he said: "Look at the year she has had. Rose Volante in Philadelphia to unify the 135 pound division again. Then the undisputed fight in Madison Square Garden on June 1.

"Then steps up to win a second division world title against Linardatou. That's her year. You can't ask for any more than that."

Hearn is now solely focused on securing Taylor the biggest fights in women's boxing as well as being rewarded financially.

"Now, my aim for Katie Taylor is to establish her as one of the biggest stars in the sport," he added.

"Forget female, forget male, just star of the sport, to give her the credibility, to get her the money that would be groundbreaking within the sport, and to set up those career-defining fights in Amanda Serrano, Delfine Persoon, Cecilia Braekhus. That is the idea of a perfect 2020."

With Persoon going to the Olympics in July and Taylor admitting she will need to build up to the Braekhus fight due to the weight difference, Hearn has come to the natural conclusion that the Serrano fight is the natural one to make next.

And as it is a super fight for both the UK and US, the head of Matchroom Boxing is looking at creating more history for Taylor on the other side of the pond.

"I think Serrano has to be next and I think it will be," he said. "I think that will come in April in New York. I think that could be the first all-female main event to headline at the Garden. I think that's a monstrous fight.

"She is one of my favourite fighters, one of my favourite people. I take her career very seriously. I'm incredibly invested emotionally in her career because I feel like it's a challenge and I'm very motivated to deliver for her."
