Lyon and England defender Lucy Bronze has won the BBC Women's Footballer of the Year award for 2020.

The 28 year-old has had a sensational 12 months, winning the treble with Lyon before reaching the semi-finals with England at the 2019 World Cup.

She also picked up the Silver Ball for the second best player at the tournament, behind World Cup victor Megan Rapinoe.

Speaking afterwards, Bronze told BBC Sport: "I look at the list of nominees for this award - before the public didn't maybe know as much about the players - and now I think 'everybody knows who these girls are'.

"That's definitely pretty special. Things have changed so much since the World Cup, and next year with a home Euros it's something that can change even more and get even bigger, especially for us in England."

It is the second time Bronze has won the award after she also scooped the prize in 2018, joining Ada Hegerberg as the only other woman to have been recognised more than once.

Bronze's Lyon currently sit three points above Paris Saint-Germain at the top of Division 1 Féminine and will be looking to secure a 14th consecutive league title when the football season resumes.
