Arsenal and Manchester City both get off to winning starts in Champions League

Arsenal and Manchester City both won the first Champions League games of the season convincingly last night.

Arsenal were away to Fiorentina for the first-leg of the last-32 stage and striker Vivianne Miedema put in an inspiring performance to help her side win 4-0.

The 23-year-old Dutchwoman scored the opener, assisted captain Kim Little and scored a second before Lisa Evans completed the rout in the second half.

City are all but through from their last-32 encounter with Swiss side Lugano after scoring five goals in the last 25 minutes to win 7-1 in the first leg.

The Manchester side were eliminated in the opening round of last season’s campaign by Atlético Madrid, but they made no mistakes this time around with Georgia Stanway scoring first after 26 minutes.

Lugano, who have 16 US football players in their squad, equalised minutes before half-time on the counter attack to give City a scare. But the two-time Champions League semi-finalists responded with six goals in the second half, including two each from Caroline Weir and Pauline Bremer.

The only concern for the Women’s Super League runner-ups of last season would be Stanway, who had to go off injured not long after scoring the first goal of the game.

Elsewhere, Paris Saint-Germain also scored seven in the first-leg of their tie with Portuguese side Braga and Atlético Madrid scored a 90th minute winner away to Serbian champions Spartak Subotica to lead 3-2 in their tie.
