Arsenal do enough to beat Lewes 2-0 in fifth round of FA Cup

Arsenal sealed a narrow but one-sided 2-0 victory in the fifth round of the FA Cup with goals from debutant Caitlin Foord and Danielle van de Donk against Championship side Lewes at Meadow Park.

Joe Montemurro’s side were dominant throughout but it wasn’t until the second half they took the lead, when Foord tapped it home.

And it was only in the last few minutes of the game that Van de Donk found herself alone in the box to slot home the second.

Arsenal’s Jordan Nobbs created the first chance for the hosts from the edge of the box but it flew wide. And Foord attempted to back Nobbs’ cross but failed to get a touch.

And Lewes showed lots of strength throughout and defended well in the first half which made it difficult for the Gunners to breakthrough, despite them having a large possession of attacking play.

The Gunners quickened the tempo immensely in the second half, getting closer and closer to a goal and it finally came for Australian Foord.

Lewes held their own and pressed hard but without reward.

The last time the two sides met Arsenal won at the Dripping Pan stadium 9-0 in the Conti Cup.
