Lyon and England star Lucy Bronze has questioned the competitiveness of the Women's Super League following Arsenal's 11-1 win over Bristol City.

The footballer quoted Arsenal's tweet about star forward Vivianne Miedema's double hat-trick and commented: "Early contender for top goal scorer in the WSL I think. And I get told the french league isn't competitive enough."

Her response sparked controversy on Twitter with many fans criticising the 28-year-old for her remarks, so much so that she was forced to respond to her own tweet.

Bronze replied: "Jeeeze relax guys. It is becoming more common for big scorelines in FAWSL... last weekend for example.

"That’ll happen if you want the top teams to be at a level to compete in Europe which I actually want BTW! So yeh a gap is there! But, the french one is bigger, I know!!"

Lyon, who Bronze signed for back in 2017, have won the French domestic league 15 times, the Coupe de France nine times and the Champions League six times.

Defending WSL champions Arsenal beat City at the weekend with Lisa Evans, Jordan Nobbs, Leah Williamson and Emma Mitchell adding to Miedema's six goals to cement the biggest win in WSL history.

Miedema is the league's top scorer with ten goals to her name and she also has seven assists, helping the north London club to climb back into pole position in the table.
