Manchester City were knocked out of the Champions League by Atletico Madrid for the second consecutive season after a 2-1 away defeat in the second leg of their last-16 tie.

The first leg was a 1-1 draw, but captain Steph Houghton’s own goal coupled with a strike from Madrid skipper Angela Sosa made the task incredibly difficult for City.

Pauline Bremer scored late on for the visitors, but after reaching the semi-finals in 2017 and 2018, this is now the second successive campaign that City have failed to reach the last eight after Atletico knocked them out in the last-32 stage last season.

This is also the third straight loss for Nick Cushing’s City, after they lost to Manchester United in the League Cup and to Arsenal at the weekend in the Women’s Super League.

After the game, Cushings said: “It’s disappointing. For the players and the staff, it will hurt them.”

Elsewhere, Ada Hegerberg broke the record for most goals in the Champions League as she scored twice in Lyon’s 7-0 second leg win over Fortuna.

The Women's Ballon d'Or winner of 2018 was level with Anja Mittag on 51 goals before the game, but her brace takes her tally to 53.

Barcelona are also through after beating FC Minsk convincingly 8-1 on aggregate, while there were 7-0 aggregate victories for Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg over BIIK-Kazygurt and Twente respectively.
