Manchester United manager Casey Stoney and ex-Arsenal star Kelly Smith feature in Soccer Aid line-up at Old Trafford

Manchester United manager Casey Stoney and former Arsenal star Kelly Smith have been named in the Soccer Aid line-up at Old Trafford in June.

The football showdown is set to return for its ninth edition which involves celebrities and former players, male and female, who battle it out to raise money for UNICEF.

Stoney played for England as a defender between 2000-2012, earning over 100 caps.

Domestically, she played for Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool before retiring in 2018. Soon after she was appointed manager for Manchester United women and helped the side gain promotion into the Women's Super League after their first season.

Smith, who was Stoney's Lioness team-mate, played for England between 1995-2014 and earned over 115 caps for the side.

She had three spells with Arsenal and many years in the US with clubs including Boston Breakers and Philadelphia Charge before returning to the UK.

Both stars will now return to the pitch in England shirts at the famous home of Manchester United.

Stoney, 37, said: "I think number one it's incredible to pull on those three lions again and to be part of such a special event for such a worthy cause.

"And obviously, for me personally, as head coach of the [Manchester United] women's team to be able to play at Old Trafford is a dream come true.

"I know the game better now than I ever have when I was a player because of being a head coach, being in it every day and seeing different pictures and analysing the game from a very different view."

Stoney has just one concern, having spent several years out of her football boots.

"I think it'll be more of I don't want to make a fool out of myself in case my players rib me for six weeks after," she added.

This year's match will be the first played on a Saturday and only the second time that women have featured in the squads.

Smith, 41 is excited to play at Old Trafford and said: "It will be a proud moment for me. Having retired a good few years ago I never thought I'd wear the England kit again.

"So, to pull those three lions over my head and reminisce about my whole England career, playing at Old Trafford in front of a very big crowd with fantastic players for a great cause will be a very special moment for me.

"I think it now makes a statement that women can play on the same level as the men. And for me and Casey, it's an absolute honour to represent the women's side of the game."

Stoney on Twitter wrote: "Extremely excited to be taking part in this years @socceraid, especially as it’s at Old Trafford. Can’t wait to line up next to @kelly_smith10 once again and I pray I don’t get in a foot race with @usainbolt"
