Manchester United's Abbie McManus says manager Casey Stoney was the reason she signed for club

Manchester United player Abbie McManus has revealed manager Casey Stoney is the reason she signed with the club.

McManus moved to United from Manchester City in the summer and credits Stoney's position as her main motivation for signing.

"The nail in the coffin for me to move was because Casey wanted me to play as a centre-half and that’s where I’ve always wanted to play.

“I’ve always preferred that position, but Nick Cushing never played me there. I was always put at right-back or left-back and I couldn’t really cement a position in that City side.

“When the chance came to move from City to United, it was something that I jumped at. I couldn’t wait to cement a position here and hopefully I can continue to do that.

“I was worried that people were looking at me playing in a full-back position for City at the time and assuming that’s where I would be playing for England. I wanted to make clear that centre-half was my position.

“It’s been a good journey so far and I’ve settled in nicely. It really feels like home now.”

Man Utd's next game is a Women's Super League fixture against Everton. The match kicks off at 12.30 on Sunday.
