Republic of Ireland's Niamh Fahey says reaching Euro 2021 would do great things for women's football in the country

The Republic of Ireland's Niamh Fahey says that qualifying for Euro 2021 would do great things for the sport in the country.

Ireland play Greece on Thursday in Dublin and will then travel to Montenegro next Wednesday on their path to the competition next year.

The side are currently behind Germany in their group. Teams that come first and second in the groups will qualify for the tournament.

She said: “You couldn’t even guess the magnitude. It would be monumental. A breakthrough moment for Irish women’s football,” she told FIFA.

Ireland are bidding for a spot in their first Euro tournament and the fact it is being hosted just a stone's throw away in England is a huge motivation for the team.

“I don’t think we could dream of a better way to play in your first tournament. It would be massive.

“Everyone knows Irish fans are notorious for their support and getting behind their team and having a good sense of a party! If any sports team of ours is doing well, the public back them massively, so we’ll do our best not to disappoint!”

Republic of Ireland v Greece will kick off tomorrow evening at 7.30pm.
