Thomas bags two as Scotland begin Pinatar Cup campaign with comfortable win over Ukraine

Martha Thomas scored twice as Scotland eased to a 3-0 victory in their opening Pinatar Cup match against Ukraine.

A calamitous mix-up between Ukrainian keeper Kateryna Samson and defender Lyubov Shmatko left Thomas with an open goal to slot home mid-way through the first half.

The 23-year-old striker doubled the Scots advantage with 17 minutes to play with a superb finish from a swift counter-attacking move.

And Claire Emslie rounded off a positive night for Shelley Kerr's side with a close range strike five minutes later.

After the match, Thomas said: "I'm really pleased to play and score the two goals. I wasn't expecting it but I'm really happy to contribute to a win on my first cap. All of my team-mates have been really welcoming this week so to come in and not feel out of place was a good feeling. It's nice to be here.

"I'm half Scottish and the whole of my mum's side of the family is very Scottish so I'm very proud to put on the shirt and represent the country. My mum, dad and gran came to the game which was really nice and I was so happy to have them in the crowd for my debut.

"This team is fantastic and we have the talent to do well at major tournaments so I'm looking forward to the future."

Scotland's next match is against Iceland on Saturday before they take on Northern Ireland on Tuesday.
