Vivianne Miedema scores winner as Arsenal beat Manchester City in Women's Super League

Vivianne Miedema's goal gave Arsenal a 1-0 victory over title rivals Manchester City and moved them into second in the Women's Super League table.

The Dutch striker blazed an early chance over the bar before Lisa Evans' also lacked the composure to convert.

But The Gunners did take the lead two minutes before half-time when Kim Little's precise through ball was dispatched ruthlessly by Miedema.

City, who had a 100% record in the league heading into the game, failed to create a clear cut chance all afternoon, with the introduction of new signing Ellen White just after the hour mark making precious little difference.

It was Arsenal who looked the more threatening again in the second period and they should have wrapped things up at the death, but Jordan Nobbs squandered a simple finish after Miedema played her through.

However, City did not make them pay and the reigning champions were able to see out the rest of the game and claim all three points.

Next up for Joe Montemurro's team is a trip to north London rivals Tottenham - a match which will be played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Meanwhile, City will look to bounce back from defeat as they host The Hammers.
