Wales manager Jayne Ludlow hails Sophie Ingle as one of the best as she names squad for Estonia friendlies

Wales women's manager Jayne Ludlow has hailed captain Sophie Ingle as one of the top players in the Women's Super League as she named her quad to face Estonia next week.

Ludlow, 41, announced a 24-player squad to play in two friendlies prior to their crucial Euro 2021 qualifiers against the Faroe Islands and Norway in April and singled out Ingle as a special talent.

"She's probably been one of the best players in the WSL this season," she said, "it's absolutely fantastic for her personally, but she has to keep doing it, and obviously for us [Wales]."

When asked if she considered moving the Chelsea defender further up the pitch she was adamant she belongs at the back.

"Sophie, for me, is a deep lying centre-mid or centre-back and that's where [Chelsea Women manager] Emma Hayes sees her too, so we're on a similar thought process there," she said.

"Does Sophie have the ability, depending on who we're playing against national team-wise, to play any position bar goalkeeper? Yeah. She won't like me saying that, to be fair.

"She fits in a certain part of our team, and she does a superb job there."

Ludlow also gave an update on Wales' most capped player Jess Fishlock, who is out with an injury having torn her hamstring at the end of last year.

"It's not suitable for her to come and pretty much miss a week of the progression and her rehab to do the flying over and back [from Seattle-based Reign FC]. It didn't make sense.

"It's all positive, but right now we don't want to interrupt that in any way, shape or form, so she'll be joining us in April."

The squad features six players under the age of 20 but 16-year-old Carrie Jones, who made her international debut last summer aged just 15, misses out to concentrate on her GCSE studies

Wales will play their friendly against Estonia on Friday March 6.

Full squad: Laura O’Sullivan, Claire Skinner, Olivia Clark, Sophie Ingle (Capt), Hayley Ladd, Loren Dykes, Lily Woodham, Rhiannon Roberts, Anna Filbey, Angharad, Jasmine Turner, Josie Green, Nadia Lawrence (Cardiff City), Georgia Walters, Rachel Rowe, Natasha Harding, Megan Wynne, Chloe Williams, Helen Ward, Kayleigh Green, Grace Horrell, Maria Francis-Jones, Ffion Morgan, Charlie Estcourt.
