West Ham's captain Gilly Flaherty says Man City drubbing is a 'wake-up call'
West Ham's captain Gilly Flaherty has said that her side's 5-0 hammering by Manchester City in the Women's Super League is a 'wake-up call' for her team.
Flaherty told NewsChain that she believed her side could win before the match on Sunday but the Hammers got a rude awakening when they trailed 4-0 at half-time.
The captain said that the players need to take responsibility for their performance: "As players we have to take ownership. We need to look at ourselves in the mirror and reflect on our performance. It wasn't good enough.
"[West Ham need to be] less fearful and show their quality, to be able to show the potential that the team have of battling at the top end of the table."
The Hammers have slipped a place in the table after the heavy defeat to City, now sitting in eighth position.
The London club face Reading this weekend with kick-off scheduled for 3pm on Sunday.
