Women's League Cup round up: wins for Manchester City and Manchester United but defeat for Arsenal on penalties

Manchester City and Manchester United won in the FA Women’s Continental League Cup, while Arsenal went out on penalties to Brighton.

Women’s World Cup Golden Boot winner Ellen White scored her first goal for City as she helped them beat her old team Birmingham City 2-1.

White fired in from Lauren Hemp’s cross for the opener, which was then cancelled out by Birmingham’s Rachel Williams. Caroline Weir scored a 35-yard stunner to win it.

United made it two wins from two in Group C with a comfortable 3-0 victory away at Everton. This victory stretched their winning streak to five in all competitions.

The match between Brighton and Arsenal ended goalless after 90 minutes and misses from Kim Little and Beth Mead from the spot meant that Brighton claimed an extra point with the 4-2 shootout victory. Arsenal still remain top of Group B.

After Chelsea’s victory at Lewes yesterday, West Ham beat Reading 1-0 in Group B thanks to Alisha Lehmann’s strike. Lehmann has now scored three times in two matches against the Royals at the Madejski Stadium. Bristol City lost 3-4 on penalties against London City Lionesses after a 1-1 draw in the same group.

Also in Group B London Bees and Charlton played out a goalless draw before the Bees won 4-2 on penalties.

Tottenham beat Championship side Crystal Palace 3-0 with goals from Anna Filbey, Kit Graham and Lucy Quinn.

In Group A, Liverpool continued their poor form this season with a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, while Durham beat Coventry United 4-0 and Sheffield United beat Blackburn Rovers 4-1.
