Arsenal scored an 89th-minute winner to sink Manchester United’s hopes of earning an impressive draw, while Chelsea salvaged a late draw in the second round of WSL fixtures.

The newly-promoted hosts United looked to have earned their first point in the league after goalkeeper Mary Earps made a number of crucial saves but Danielle van de Donk’s strike ensured Arsenal left Leigh Sports Village with a 1-0 win.

Chelsea looked set to suffer a shock defeat against Brighton with six minutes to go, but substitute Adelina Engman scored to get the game back to 1-1.

Maria Thorisdotter hit the post in the closing seconds for Chelsea, but was flagged offside anyway to ensure the game ended in a draw.

City’s Pauline Bremer scored a double in their 2-0 victory over Reading. Last year’s WSL runners-up have three wins from three this season, following their midweek Champions League victory over Lugano.

But the injuries continue to pile up for City as it was announced that England star Georgia Stanway is sidelined with a hamstring injury for the next six weeks at least.

Chloe Kelly scored two outrageous goals from outside the box to hand Everton a 2-0 win and keep their 100 per cent record in tact.

The Toffees won just three matches last season in the league but thanks to Kelly’s brilliant strikes, they look set to improve on their 10th place finish last season.

Elsewhere, Tottenham earned their first ever victory in the top flight as Rachel Furness scored a penalty to give the hosts a 1-0 win over Liverpool. Liverpool have now lost seven of their last nine matches in the WSL.

West Ham’s Adriana Leon scored in the first half to earn the Hammers a 1-0 victory over Birmingham City.
