Former Spurs goalkeeper Chloe Morgan has dropped a Twitter bombshell hinting at the real reason behind her departure from the WSL side.

The 30 year-old, who made over 60 appearances for the north London club, announced she was leaving a month ago, but has only now chosen to speak out.

She said: "As a female player, my values have not always aligned with the main club and it has been difficult and conflicting for me to reserve comment on things which I feel strongly about - especially equality.  

“Whilst I am not yet in a position to share my experiences, I am even more in awe of the players and staff for the achievements of the women’s side, despite the adversity we have sometimes faced.

“Going forwards, I ask that more consideration is given to the women’s players. I make this request with the sole intention of wanting more for the next generation of women’s players.

“Once again, I’d like to thank my wonderful team-mates and  members of staff for the incredible memories I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

She added: “Of course, I am sad to leave the club I have been a part of for a lot of my adult life, but I am also happy to move on to a next chapter and to explore ways to develop and progress the women’s game.”

Morgan, who was part of the squad which secured promotion to the WSL during the 2018/19 season, while confident to speak out, acknowledged the pressures faced by her professional colleagues.

“I appreciate that sometimes it is difficult for players to speak up, but it will never be a bad thing if your motivation is for positive change,” she said.

Morgan’s statement drew an extraordinary response from one of the game’s leading ambassadors for equality.  

Lewes FC general manager Maggie Murphy, the first club to pay its women the same as men, said earlier on Twitter: “I have so much respect for @Morgie_89. I love her bravery for speaking out to progress the game, her honesty and her authenticity.”

And this evening, she spoke exclusively to NewsChain about her respect for the former Spurs player.

“It's very difficult for players to be outspoken on certain issues and she made that clear in the statement,” said Murphy.

"Spurs in particular have had this transition from being a Championship club that operated entirely separately from their men's club to now, for the first time, being wholly part of the men's club.  

“But that change and acceptance and inclusion takes a lot longer to really take root. So, I'm sure she's going to reflect more on some of her experiences being part of a rich and powerful football club.  

“The fact that a lot of the WSL clubs now train at the same facilities as the men's clubs is something relatively new and is obviously welcome. For other clubs that's not happened yet.  

"But it still feels slow. Sometimes the change and progress, we're often made to feel grateful for some of the steps that are taking place.

“But I think a player like Chloe, in her tweets she acknowledges the progress and she acknowledges what the club has provided, but it almost feels like players don't want to be made to feel grateful for the opportunities that they are given. Because they work really, really hard and they have to juggle a really difficult work and life balance as well. So I think it's about players not wanting to be made to feel grateful for things.”

Former Charlton Athletic footballer Jessica Creighton, wrote: “I hear you. I feel you. Thank you for speaking up.”

Chris Paouros, the CEO of the award-winning Tottenham Hotspur LGBTQ+ Supporters Association Proud Lilywhites, added: “Thanks for everything Chloe. The development of the women’s game needs people like you driving it or the change we need will continue to be slow and painful.”

And there was also support from outside the game, with Liberal Democrat Councillor for London Bridge and West Bermondsey, Humaira Ali posting: “Her departure letter is damning of the club on its actions towards equality. As a lifelong Spurs fan I look forward to the club providing an open and honest answer.”
