GB speed skating star Elise Christie celebrates being ‘back to real self’ following mental health battle

Great Britain’s short track speed skater Elise Christie has revealed she is ‘back to her real self’ following her battle with mental health.

The 30 year-old, who is a ten-time European champion, took a break from social media earlier this year, but has now updated her fans and said that she is ‘grateful for every day’ after she ‘nearly didn’t make it into 2019’.

The three-time world champion wrote on Instagram: "Celebrating 6 months since self harm! Who knew that behind this picture lay a very broken girl. I was about to face the most challenging period of my life, whilst being the most broken I’ve ever been.

"I’ve lost a lot of good people through this sickness, through my open-ness about my issues, but if I can impact one person, save one person’s life.

"Then that’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make. No one should feel the way I felt that December. I nearly didn’t make it into 2019, I’m grateful for every day.

“And so thankful to everyone who’s stuck by me throughout as I made a journey back to my real self. I wouldn’t be six months self harm free if it wasn’t for you guys! Thank you. And if I can do it, someone as broken as I was, then you guys can do it too! Promise.”

The Scot is now preparing for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
