Glasgow City announce one of club’s ‘biggest ever signings’ in South Africa captain Janine van Wyk

Scottish Women’s Premier League champions Glasgow City have announced the signing of South Africa captain and accomplished centre-back Janine van Wyk.

The 33-year-old, who was described by Glasgow as ‘one of the biggest ever signings in Scottish women’s football’, is also the all-time leading appearance maker for her country’s national team.

As well as featuring in two Olympic Games and last summer’s World Cup, she also has experience at club level with National Women’s Soccer League side Houston Dash, who she played 37 times for between 2017 and 2018.

Speaking about her decision to join the club, Van Wyk said: "I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my football career with a football club that is known to be the best team in the Scottish top League.

"I look forward to playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, win titles and most importantly continue to learn as much as I can about the insights of the game and hopefully add value to the squad with the experience I carry."

And club manager Laura Montgomery added: "If we are talking about players who are known across the world, Janine is in that category. Her record is incredible on and off the pitch in what she has done for girls and women’s sport in her own country as well as in her promotion of equality.

"Her jersey is on display at the FIFA Museum next to the other top female players in the world, this is the calibre of player and individual that she is.

"At Glasgow City, we are all about championing women and girls and Janine very much fits into that mould. Her footballing CV is very impressive and we are delighted she has chosen to continue her journey with our club."

Last season, Glasgow won 20 of their 21 games in the SWPL1 on their way to a 13th consecutive league title.

They are also still in the Champions League having beaten Brondby on their way to the last eight of the competition.

They are due to face Wolfsburg on August 21 in a single-legged tie following the disruption caused by the coronavirus.
