Catriona Matthew has said leading the European team to victory in the Solheim Cup this weekend at Gleneagles would rank above her 2009 British Open win.

The 50-year-old, who claimed the only major of her career just weeks after giving birth to her daughter, is hoping to take the trophy away from the USA for the first time since 2013.

And while Matthew was a part of the team that won six years ago - as well as being on the winning side in 2003 and 2011 - she speaks incredibly highly of the chance to win it as a captain.

She said: "To be a winning captain here [at Gleneagles] would probably rank just above my British Open win.

"I've always felt the Solheim Cup has been a highlight of my career when it comes around every two years."

In the 15 Solheim Cups that have been played since the creation of the tournament in 1990, the US lead 10-5.

But the last time the tournament was held in Scotland - which was at Loch Lomond Golf Club in 2000 - Europe won by five points and the US recorded their lowest ever score outside of America, finishing on just six and a half.

The opening ceremony gets underway on Thursday, September 12, with the action taking place from Friday, September 13 to Sunday, September 15.
