Europe pull off incredible comeback to win greatest Solheim Cup

Europe won back the Solheim Cup by a single point after one of the most remarkable days of singles golf in memory.

The home team found themselves on the brink as the USA needed just half a point from the final two matches, but Bronte Law and Suzann Pettersen won the final few holes to send the crowd into ecstasy.

Winning captain Catriona Matthew, who regained the trophy for Europe for the first time since 2013, said: “Just unbelievable, there’s never been a better moment for it to come down to the last game.”

After sharing the spoils on the opening two holes, Danielle Kang was up by one entering the final two holes. But the 18th hole proved difficult for the American and Carlota Ciganda’s three birdies in the final six holes gave Europe a slender lead after the first match.

Nelly Korda went through a spree of winning five of six holes on the back nine to bring the USA back level once more in her match against Caroline Hedwall.

Georgia Hall and Celine Boutier showcased their exceptional form over the weekend in their singles wins to give Europe a two point lead and real hope of regaining the Solheim Cup for the first time since 2015.

Despite Europe being on a high, Jodi Ewart Shadoff struggled throughout the course barring the first hole and lost her match on the 15th hole.

Azahara Munoz fought back admirably against Angel Yin as she won four out of five holes at the beginning of the back nine but the American resisted to bring team USA back level once more.

Jessica Korda dominated her match against Caroline Masson and when Charley Hull missed a putt to win on the 17th hole, team USA only needed half a point to retain the cup. This was when the drama reached fever pitch in Scotland.

Anna Nordqvist was supreme in her match against Morgan Pressel and Law won once Ally McDonald could not reach the green from the sand on the 17th. This brought the whole weekend down to the last match.

On the 17th, Pettersen played a stunning shot to give her a putt to win one of the most remarkable Solheim Cups in history and she showed immense calmness to knock it in.
