Great Britain hockey captain Pearne-Webb aware of Olympic pressure as team head into EuroHockey Championships

Great Britain hockey captain Holly Pearne-Webb has said she is well aware of the pressure on her team as they head into the EuroHockey Championships.

Victory in the tournament would ensure the Olympic champions book their place at the Tokyo Games next summer.

And despite the fact that the GB side are currently going through a 'development stage', Pearne-Webb knows the pressure to qualify for 2020 is still very much there.

Speaking to BBC Sport, she said: "There is a lot of pressure in that we want to qualify and we need to qualify.

"It's a completely different squad with a lot of inexperience. Our game and our style is quite different to what it used to be. And we've also got a new coach and his style is quite different.

"It's a real development stage but we're now at the business side of the year where we've got to qualify for the Olympics.

"We're trying to knit everything together and I think it's starting to come and hopefully the results will come with it."

A new coach was announced after Danny Kerry, who led the women's team to gold in Rio, made the move across to the men's team.

The new person in charge of the women's team is Mark Hager, who was appointed back in January following nearly ten years with New Zealand, a stint which was capped off with victory at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Ahead of the EuroHockey Championships, Hagar said: "If I'm honest we're a little bit inconsistent and at the moment we're probably not strong enough defensively.

"We're really trying to work on things and the frustration for all of us is that it's just not happening fast enough.

"But I've seen a lot of progress and we know that it will happen and I definitely have belief that we can do well at the Euros."

Great Britain kick off the tournament in Antwerp with a match against Ireland on Saturday morning.
