Hockey round-up: newly-promoted Hampstead & Westminster off to a flier on first weekend

Newly-promoted Hampstead & Westminster won 4-1 against Beeston in the first round of the Investec Women’s Hockey Premier Division.

International Grace Balsdon opened the scoring hitting the back of the net from a penalty corner in the sixth minute.

Reigning champions Surbiton beat Loughborough University 3-2. Georgie Twigg and Alice Sharp scored in the first quarter but Loughborough’s newest signing Izzy Petter scored on her debut along with Beth Peers. Midfielder Emily Defroand secured the final goal for Surbiton in the 40th minute.

Buckingham looked to start well after missing out on a final spot last season. They defeated Clifton Robinsons 4-2; goals were from Katrina Nicholson (2), Lottie Porter and Natasha James.

Holcombe clinched one point in their opening fixture against East Grinstead. The side finished top of the league last season but narrowly lost to Surbiton in the final.

The next set of fixtures takes place on September 21.
