Olympic hockey champion Alex Danson announces she is pregnant with her first child

Olympic hockey gold medallist Alex Danson has announced she and her husband Alex Bennett are expecting their first child.

The couple, who married in 2019, took to social media to announce their happy news while on holiday in Norway.

Danson wrote: “Having the most incredible adventure........but we cannot wait for the next one to start. Baby Danson-Bennett coming soon #17weeks #Norway #sohappy #family #mylove”

Many were quick to congratulate the pair.

Team GB athlete Jenny Meadows wrote: “Awww lovely! You are 1 week ahead of me, oh and my bump is huge compared to yours.”

While BBC presenter Sally Nugent said: "The best news. Congratulations to you both xx"

And Dame Sarah Storey wrote: "Yay huge congrats"

Danson retired from hockey earlier this year as a result of a head injury she sustained in 2018 which caused brain trauma.

She said at the time: “This is not a sad retirement. I have played more games in more tournaments than I could ever have dreamt of. I have made life- long friends, travelled the world and loved every single minute of my career.”

In her career she claimed 203 caps for England and 103 for Great Britain.

Among a host of achievements, she won a bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympics and triumphed in a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Games.
