Surbiton aim for eighth consecutive title as Women’s Hockey Premier League gets underway

The Investec Women’s Hockey Premier League begins tomorrow, with the nation's top 10 teams battling it out for the title.

Reigning champions Surbiton will be looking to take their eighth consecutive title during the 2019/20 season. The side will be without Izzy Petter, who made her international debut this summer, as she has moved to newly-promoted Loughborough Students.

The return of Beckie Middleton and Holly Munro will however add strength to the squad. Middleton played a stint over in New Zealand and England international Munro is back after playing with top university side Birmingham.

Holcombe finished top of the English national league last season but couldn’t hold onto top spot after narrowly losing to Surbiton in the final. South African forward Dirkie Chamberlain left the club at the end of last season. Lorna Cruickshank from Durham University will replace the striker.

London’s Hampstead & Westminster have a new addition to the squad, England international and former FIH World Player of the year Lily Owsley. Kate Richardson-Walsh’s side will be giving their all after earning promotion last season. Joie Leigh will be back after playing a season in the Netherlands.

East Grinstead finished third at the end of last season with the help of Sophie Bray and Laura Unsworth. Tess Howard and Amy Costello are the latest signings and will join Ellie Rayer in the set up.

Nottingham club Beeston will be aiming to have a better run of form in the new season after finishing just outside the top four last season. The club will see two international players, Argentian Agustina Fernandez Merlo and Jenny Rizzo from the States.

Buckingham missed out on their spot in the final to Holcombe last season and finished in fourth. Set to strengthen the team are new signings include Abbie Brant, Lucy Wood and Emma O’Nien.

Clifton Robinsons will be looking to move into the top four in the Premier Division. Carmen Ansley has left the club and moves to Swansea. The club has appointed new coach Juliet Rayden who will take over from Steve Dixon who moves to become Director of Performance. The side has kept the majority of their players.

Loughborough Students will join the University of Birmingham as the only university-based side in the league. Joining Izzy Petter will be her England teammate Lizzie Neal, who will compete in her second season with Loughborough.
