Katie Taylor forced to relinquish WBO World Super Lightweight Title as she pursues mega fights in 2020

Undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor has been forced to vacate the super lightweight world title that she won in November.

The Irish superstar, who already holds all four championship belts in the 135 pound division, beat Christina Linardatou by unanimous decision at the Manchester Arena to claim the 140 pound crown.

But now the Olympic gold medalist has relinquished the title because WBO rules state you cannot hold belts in more than one division at any one time.

As a result, the decision for Taylor to vacate the super lightweight strap would seemingly push a bout between herself and undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus further away.

The Norwegian, who campaigns at 147 pounds, has been doubted for a huge clash with Taylor, but the difference in weight remains the stumbling block.

And while both parties seem keen on getting the fight made, Taylor has said previously how she feels she will need to build up to a bout with Braekhus.

She said: "It's a fight where I'm going to have to build myself up to I think.

"I'm obviously naturally a lightweight fighter, even though I stepped up to light-welterweight in the last fight, I make lightweight very, very comfortably, so it is a fight that's going to take time I think.

"But it is absolutely a history-making fight… undisputed champion against undisputed champion, I don't think that's ever been done before, so that will be a very, very special fight."

Taylor has also been linked with fights against unified featherweight world champion Amanda Serrano and a rematch with Belgian Delfine Persoon, who she beat by split decision back in June.
