Lewes confirm re-signing of three players for new Women’s Championship season

Women’s Championship side Lewes have confirmed the re-signing of three players for the 2020/21 season.

Sophie O’Rourke, Emily Donovan and Emma Jones have all signed new deals to keep them at the club for the new season, which is expected to start in September.

Lewes finished eighth in the second tier last season after the campaign was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The south-coast side are the only club in the world to pay their men’s and women’s teams the same wage.

Thanks to a crowdfunding campaign, the club recently raised £34,000 to pay for new infrastructure such as floodlights at their ground The Dripping Pan as well as improvements to the pitch, bar and toilets.

General manager Maggie Murphy gave an exclusive interview to NewsChain back in September about how other clubs could learn from the model Lewes have developed.
