Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola's mother dies from coronavirus, aged 82

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola's mother has died from coronavirus, the club have confirmed.

Dolors Sala Carrio passed away in Barcelona after contracting the virus at the age of 82, just weeks after her son donated £920,000 towards medical equipment to help fight COVID-19.

In a statement, Man City said: "Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends."

More than 135,000 people have now tested positive for coronavirus in Spain, with 13,055 losing their lives.

But the country does appear to be over the peak of the disease as Monday saw the fewest number of reported new cases for two weeks.

Guardiola is currently back in Spain and recently told football fans to remain sensible and stay in their homes.

He said; “We miss football. We miss the life that we had a few days ago but now is the time to listen, to follow our scientists, doctors and nurses.

“You are my football family and we are going to do everything possible to make you feel better. We’ll come back from this stronger, better, kinder... and a little bit fatter. Stay inside, stay safe.”

All elite football in England is currently suspended until at least April 30, while Premier League clubs met last week and agreed the competition will not resume at the beginning of May.
