Marathon events at 2020 Paralympic Games to remain in Tokyo despite heat concerns

Marathon events at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games will take place in the host city rather than being moved elsewhere, according to the President of the International Paralympic Committee.

The marathon and race walk events at the Olympics have been moved to Sapporo because of worries about the heat.

But IPC President Andrew Parsons says he has responded to the para-athletes calls to remain in Tokyo.

He said: "The weather data, which was reviewed by the IPC medical committee, revealed that although the Games period in 2019 was slightly hotter than in 2018, the temperatures around the time the marathon events will take place were within all our thresholds for safe and optimal competition.

"With many marathon athletes also competing in track events during the Games, a move would be logistically difficult for them to accommodate."

The 2020 Paralympic Games will take place between August 25 and September 6.
