Head coach Lisa Alexander gets the perfect send-off as Australian Diamonds win netball bushfire relief charity match

Australian netball head coach Lisa Alexander received the perfect send off after her side won 66-53 against the Super Netball All-Stars in a bushfire charity relief match.

It was announced last month that Netball Australia were not going to renew Alexander's contract after she spent nine years in the role with 102 Test caps to her name.

The match saw over 11,000 fans gather at Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena.

Alexander said: "Netball is a true reflection of the Australian community and the values that we hold dear, which is teamwork and we support each other.

"We all knew the purpose of this was to raise as much money as we possibly could for all of those people that have been suffering and hopefully we have brought a bit of joy to their life."

And when asked what legacy she hopes to leave behind, she replied: "Hopefully a really great legacy. I've enjoyed every moment of it. We've tried to build a high-performance program and that's the envy of the world and we've certainly done that.

"We've left it in a great position for whoever takes over this team and this squad and it's really exciting for the future."

Diamonds captain Caitlin Bassett said: "I think it's understanding to be yourself and Lisa is very genuine and she shows how she feels.

"She understands us being vulnerable at times and that's definitely something she has passed on to her players.

"This last game today... playing against such an amazing team is such a fitting way to say farewell and thank you for all that she’s done for us."

The total amount raised is yet to be confirmed.
