New Liverpool signing Rachel Furness on how she can help the struggling Women's Super League side escape relegation

New Liverpool signing Rachel Furness believes her 'experience and leadership' can help the club avoid relegation from the Women's Super League.

The 31-year-old creative midfielder has joined the Merseyside outfit after spending the first half of the campaign on loan at Tottenham.

And now Furness joins Liverpool from parent club Reading as she looks to give The Reds the attacking quality they have been missing so far which has left them without a WSL victory so far this season.

She told BBC Sport: "You can see they have talented players. It's an exciting squad and I wanted to join and be a part of that."

Despite a winless four months in the league, Liverpool have only conceded 12 goals in ten games and as a result still sit above bottom club Bristol City in the table on goal difference.

However, the struggle for boss Vicky Jepson lies in the team's goalscoring as they have netted just three times all season, something Furness believes she can help turn around.

"I'm up for the challenge of helping the girls move up the league," she said. "They haven't not been performing well. Defensively they have been solid. They just haven't had that break or that extra bit of luck.

"I'm hoping to bring some of my experience and leadership qualities to the team to help them get that first three points, which I think is long overdue.

"Just from a few days here I can see Vicky has a great relationship with the whole squad and that's really important. She is a manager I want to play for. We are together and we're going for the same thing. I think we can have a good second half of the season."

Liverpool return on Sunday in a huge game away at fellow strugglers Brighton, where a victory would see them leapfrog the south coast side in the table.

NewsChain will provide a comprehensive round-up of all the weekend's action from the WSL.
