'No income, no gym, nothing. It's just s**t' - Britain's Chantelle Cameron on being a boxer when you can't box

British world title challenger Chantelle Cameron describes the impact of coronavirus on her boxing career as a 'nightmare'.

The 28 year-old was set to feature on the undercard of Terri Harper's homecoming world title defence in Doncaster on April 24, but the show was pulled due to the coronavirus pandemic and the British Boxing Board of Control subsequently suspended all sanctioned shows until April 30.

And for Cameron, who has not fought since November last year, the impact both physically and financially has hit hard.

Speaking exclusively to NewsChain, she said: "It's a nightmare! No income, no gym, nothing. It's just s**t. We don't know when our next pay day is, sponsors dropping out, it's really hard.

"A couple of sponsors have cancelled their sponsorship because they've got to concentrate on themselves. And then obviously because I'm not fighting I'm not getting any income. And I don't work either so I have nothing coming in at all."

The cost of the training camp is something those outside of the sport fail to account for when totalling up a fighter's expenses.

Northampton-based Cameron trains at Jamie Moore's gym in Astley, Manchester and therefore rents a flat out nearby with fellow GB amateur Savannah Marshall.

And Cameron revealed she has been training off and on for months in the hope of securing a fight date and now the April show has fallen through she has no way of recouping that expenditure.

She said: "I thought I was going to be fighting a lot before April so I started camp in January and then I came off the boil a bit because I got told the fight wasn't going to happen so soon.

"And then I started up again. So I've spent money at the start of January where the fight didn't happen, so I've lost money anyway.

"2020 has definitely not been the year so far!"

Back in Northampton, Cameron is now focused on trying to train as much as she can given the circumstances.

However, given the stringent rules which have been outlined by the Government with regards to social distancing and everyone remaining two metres apart, boxing training suddenly becomes very difficult.

"I'm running outside, doing little bits outside," she added. "But obviously you can't be near people now so I can't do pads or anything."

Harper's fight against Liverpudlian Natasha Jonas has been re-scheduled for an unannounced date in June, but it is unclear whether Cameron will still feature on the bill.

She was scheduled to have a 'tick over' fight on the card before jumping into a world title fight later on in the year as either the WBC mandatory at 135 or 140 pounds.

And while she still hopes that a world championship belt will be up for grabs for her in 2020, she is aware 'anything could happen right now'.
