Northern Mystics beat Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in first game back as ANZ Premiership restarts

The Northern Mystics kicked off the return of the ANZ Premiership with a 47-40 win over the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic at the Auckland Netball Centre.

The league was halted three months ago after just one round due to the coronavirus pandemic, but returned last night behind-closed-doors.

Mystics recorded their first goal in just over two minutes and held a 11-8 lead after the first quarter.

As both teams got back into the swing of things, Magic had several chances to score but Mystics defensive duo of Phoenix Karaka and Sulu Fitzpatrick stopped Magic’s attack from gaining entry into the circle.

Mystics continued to put on an impressive display with the help of 18 year-old Grace Nweke who scored from 41 of her 45 shots.

The side continued to build on their strengths leading by four goals at half time.

There was no looking back for Mystics as they dominated all areas of the court as Peta Toeava showed off her attacking skills with 27 goal assists, as they entered the final quarter with a 34-30 lead.

Magic continued to push to narrow the scoreline but it was not enough as Mystics sealed victory winning by seven.

Auckland Netball Centre will host the first seven weeks of fixtures before teams are allowed to play in front of fans at their home venues for the remaining three weeks of fixtures.

Mystics will next face Southern Steel on June 27 in the third round of the ANZ Premiership.
